Amazon Prime Video has just unveiled the first set of images for its highly anticipated television adaptation of Stephen King's seminal novel, 'Carrie.' This new series, spearheaded by acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is set to offer a modern take on the iconic tale of a telekinetic high schooler.
Reports of this project first surfaced in October 2024, generating considerable excitement among fans of Stephen King and Mike Flanagan alike. Amazon officially greenlit the series for an eight-episode run in April 2025, signaling a significant investment in bringing this dark narrative to a new generation.
The series is characterized as a complete reimagining of King's original novel. Its official synopsis highlights Carrie White, a sheltered high school outcast portrayed by Summer Howell, whose life takes a dramatic turn following her father's sudden passing. Thrust into the complex world of public high school, Carrie grapples with a viral bullying incident, the pervasive influence of social media, and the emergence of her latent telekinetic abilities.
Beyond Summer Howell in the titular role, the series features a talented cast including Samantha Sloyan as Carrie's intensely protective mother, Margaret. Siena Agudong steps into the role of Sue Snell, Alison Thornton portrays Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette plays Tommy Ross, and Josie Tota is cast as Tina. Arthur Conti joins as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Mike Flanagan is at the helm of this ambitious project, serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He is also slated to direct four episodes of the series, ensuring his distinct directorial vision permeates the adaptation. Stephen King himself is involved as an executive producer, lending his endorsement to this new interpretation of his work. The production is a collaborative effort with Amazon MGM Studios.
Flanagan has firmly established himself as a preeminent voice in contemporary horror cinema. His critically acclaimed television productions, including "The Haunting of Hill House," "Midnight Mass," and "The Fall of the House of Usher" for Netflix, have garnered widespread praise. He has also successfully adapted other King works, such as "Doctor Sleep" (a sequel to "The Shining") and "Gerald's Game." Most recently, Flanagan adapted King's 2020 novella "The Life of Chuck" into a feature film starring Tom Hiddleston.
First published in 1974, "Carrie" marked Stephen King's debut novel and quickly rose to become a bestseller. Its cinematic adaptation in 1976, directed by Brian DePalma and starring Sissy Spacek, achieved significant box office success and critical acclaim. This film is widely regarded as a landmark in the horror genre, influencing countless subsequent works and solidifying "Carrie" as a timeless narrative of terror and adolescent angst.
