When the concept arose to explore Elle Woods' teenage years, particularly her experiences as an outsider in Seattle, marking 25 years since the initial film, the creators of the Prime Video series 'Elle,' a prequel to 'Legally Blonde,' recognized an opportunity for extended storytelling. This led them to develop an eight-episode series, which has already been renewed for a second season and completed its production, allowing for a more profound engagement with not only the titular character, now embodied by Lexi Minetree, but also with the supporting cast in her orbit.
Caroline Dries, the co-showrunner, emphasized at the New York premiere of 'Elle' that the extended format of a series provides ample scope for in-depth character development. She noted that having numerous hours allows for a richer exploration of Elle's personality and background, including her family life, presenting a more dynamic method to recount the protagonist's journey. Jason Moore, who directed the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the series facilitated a more detailed portrayal of Elle's family, contrasting with the original film's more archetypal depictions of her parents and limited screen time for other characters. This prolonged narrative allows viewers to witness her growth and the subtle influences of her upbringing.
Executive producer Lauren Neustadter expressed enthusiasm for introducing audiences to characters crafted specifically for the series, creating a world for Elle that expands beyond the established cinematic universe. She explained that while Reese Witherspoon's Elle in the original film is self-assured when entering Harvard Law, the prequel aims to depict her during the more formative and emotionally vulnerable high school period. Tom Everett Scott, who plays Elle's father, underscored the fragility of this age, even more so than the college years. Moore further elaborated that while Minetree’s Elle captures the same adventurous spirit as Witherspoon’s, the series delves into her origins, inviting viewers to ponder the essence of Elle Woods when she is alone and unadorned.
The cast, writers, director, and producers universally lauded Lexi Minetree's performance. Dries commended Minetree as a joy to collaborate with, describing her as witty, intelligent, whimsical, kind, and inclusive – embodying all the qualities one would expect from Elle Woods. Dries also praised Minetree's exceptional acting prowess, noting that her seamless portrayal often makes her performance seem effortless. Moore was particularly impressed by Minetree’s meticulousness and preparation, observing that she naturally possesses qualities akin to Elle Woods, being organized, thoughtful, resolute, articulate, and humorous. He remarked on her extraordinary foresight, noting that she had reportedly memorized all the scripts before filming even began, demonstrating her deep understanding of the character's entire narrative arc. Neustadter recalled Minetree's initial audition tape, inspired by Elle's memorable Harvard Law admissions video, as a testament to her intelligence and grasp of the character. She highlighted how Minetree channels Reese Witherspoon's essence without merely imitating her, creating a distinct yet authentic portrayal of Elle Woods.
Neustadter hopes the series serves as a source of joy and optimism in challenging times. Scott shared a personal anecdote about his daughter, who found the original 'Legally Blonde' inspiring, reinforcing his pride in being part of a franchise that empowers young women and anyone who defies limitations. The shared experience of working on 'Elle' and its positive reception from diverse audiences underscores the timeless appeal of the narrative and its message of empowerment.
