Akron Community Rallies to Support Asheville Families in Hurricane Helene's Aftermath
In the wake of the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the people of Northeast Ohio have come together to support those impacted in Asheville, North Carolina. A local food truck owner, David Wells, has spearheaded a community-driven effort to collect donations and deliver essential supplies to the region in need.
Bringing Hope and Sustenance to Asheville's Struggling Families
Answering the Call to Help
David Wells, the owner of Uncle Bacon's and BBQ, felt compelled to act after learning of the dire situation in Asheville. Tens of thousands of people were left without running water and other basic necessities, and Wells knew he had to do something to alleviate their suffering. "It hit me hard that here I am sitting in my warm bed worried about things that don't matter, and you've got families that are suffering and the worst possible day and week of their lives," he said.Wells and his wife took to social media, announcing that they would be collecting donations at their Akron Food Works location throughout the week. The response from the community was overwhelming, with thousands of donations pouring in from both local and out-of-state supporters. The donations included a wide range of essential items, such as food, toilet paper, diapers, batteries, and toiletries.
Expanding the Reach of Compassion
As the donations continued to accumulate, Wells' efforts expanded beyond his initial plans. He was gifted 600 pounds of meat, 500 pounds of corn, and 1,200 pounds of canned chicken, all of which he plans to deliver to the families in need. "The magnitude of it is kind of surprising, but it just kind of goes to show that despite what you see and hear, we are a united nation in times like these," said Wells. The community's outpouring of support has been a testament to the power of human compassion. Eli Bale, a local resident, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, saying, "Living in a place like Akron where we don't experience a lot of natural disasters like Asheville did, it can make you feel distant. But once I heard that Uncle BBQ started collecting donations and they were going to take it down there, it felt like the world got a lot smaller."
Delivering Hope and Sustenance
On Monday, Wells and his team will be heading to Black Mountain, a town just outside of Asheville, to deliver the collected supplies to an organization called Cajun Navy 2016. Their goal is to feed thousands of people and provide them with the essential items they need to weather the aftermath of Hurricane Helene."It's a living nightmare down there, and they're going through the worst days and weeks of their lives. And if something like this, whether it's food or supplies, can just give them a little bit of hope, that's what it's all about," said Wells. The community's efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the impact of their generosity will be felt by the families in Asheville for weeks to come. As the last day of donations approaches, the people of Akron continue to rally together, determined to make a difference in the lives of those affected by the devastating hurricane.
